Located at No 5, 58/2, Akbar Sahib St, Police Quarters, this quaint eatery has earned its reputation for serving up delicious, authentic South Indian meals. Whether you're looking for a filling breakfast or a hearty lunch, this place delivers the flavors of Chennai’s traditional cuisine with a distinct charm.

The first thing that stands out about Kasi Vinayaga Mess is its simple, no-frills ambiance. It's the kind of place where locals gather for their daily dose of comfort food, and the warm, welcoming environment makes you feel right at home. The focus here is undoubtedly on the food, and the restaurant has mastered the art of creating dishes that bring out the best of Tamil Nadu's culinary heritage.

The menu is straightforward, offering a variety of South Indian staples. One of the most popular choices is the idli, served piping hot and soft, paired with sambhar and coconut chutney. The sambhar is a perfect blend of tangy and spicy, offering a delightful kick that complements the mildness of the idlis. The chutney, on the other hand, is freshly ground, with just the right amount of coconut flavor to elevate the experience.

If you're a fan of dosas, Kasi Vinayaga Mess offers several variations, all crispy and golden-brown. The masala dosa, stuffed with a flavorful potato filling, is a crowd favorite. Served with the same delightful chutney and sambhar, it's a satisfying meal that's perfect for breakfast or dinner. For those who prefer something different, the rava dosa and onion dosa are also excellent choices.

Another standout dish at Kasi Vinayaga Mess is the vada, deep-fried to crispy perfection and accompanied by tangy sambhar and chutneys. It’s a beloved snack that pairs beautifully with a cup of filter coffee. Speaking of filter coffee, it's a must-try here. Served in a traditional tumbler, the coffee is rich, aromatic, and the ideal way to round off a meal.

For those who enjoy rice-based dishes, the tamil nadu thali served at Kasi Vinayaga Mess is an absolute treat. The thali features a variety of curries, rice, sambar, curd, and a selection of vegetables, giving you a little taste of everything. The balance of flavors in this dish is truly reflective of the region's rich culinary traditions.

The service at Kasi Vinayaga Mess is quick and efficient, yet the staff remains friendly and attentive to your needs. Despite being a no-frills place, you won’t feel rushed, and the staff is always ready with recommendations if you're unsure about what to order.

  • Excellent south Indian food. Few points, remember there is a queue for token, next seating by color of token in turns again from queue, seating based on number of token match to number on table. Rice tightly packed into bubble cylindrical shape.. I thought I could eat 2 but it's tightly packed...one was sufficient. At Rs.90 worth far more. Awesome sambhar, rasam and kottu poriyal Appalam pickle. Dhal podi ghee available at Rs.10. Packing Rs.120 but need to pick on 1st floor. My suggestion to management... please simplify token distribution and seating. Keep people on single queue wanting to have lunch. Give token when table available so that seating is immediate. And packet delivery at ground floor entrance... hard of people with knee and age issue. But once again great Sambhar....please keep the food taste same. 29.06.25 Be patient sometimes start time may vary a bit. You will be asked to Sit. People standing with crossed hands discouraged :) I like the culture and respect given to food and love to eat in such a place !

  • We went here for lunch in the afternoon. Meals cost ₹110, and it’s just ₹10 extra if you add ghee and paruppu podi/dal. The meals were excellent – tasted just like home food and definitely worth the money. Luckily, we reached before the crowd started, so we didn’t have to wait. But as soon as we began eating, a long queue formed outside! This is one of the best vegetarian messes to eat in Triplicane. Don’t miss it if you’re nearby. Paruppu podi with ghee is a must-try along with the meals.

  • Visited Vinayaka Mess recently and it turned out to be one of the most satisfying, homely meals had in Chennai. The food is simple, fresh and served hot, very close to what you would get at a traditional Tamil home. The meals are served on a banana leaf with all the usual South Indian accompaniments, and every item on the plate is actually enjoyable rather than just “filling up” space. The quantity of rice is generous, and the side dishes, sambar, rasam and buttermilk all have a balanced, comforting taste. The place follows an old-school mess system with tokens and numbered seating, which adds a bit of charm and nostalgia to the overall experience. Seating is compact and there can be a waiting time during peak hours, but the quick, disciplined service ensures good table turnover. Pricing is very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food, making it great value for money, especially if you love traditional vegetarian meals. Overall, Vinayaka Mess is a solid choice when you want no‑nonsense, authentic South Indian food that feels like a home-cooked meal.

  • A Flavorful Find at Kasi Vinayaga Mess! Had a great dinner yesterday at Kasi Vinayaga Mess — simple, soulful, and super satisfying! Tried: Dosa Curd Rice Pongal (our favorite!) The Pongal was absolutely delicious — soft, comforting, and perfectly complemented by their top-notch sambar. The flavors hit just right! What really stood out? We noticed several elderly folks patiently waiting outside even before the place opened at 7:30 PM — a true sign of how beloved and trusted this mess is in the area. Budget-friendly Self-service setup We’re definitely going back to try their famous meals next time — heard it’s the real star of the show! If you’re in the area and love authentic South Indian food, don’t miss this spot! #KasiVinayagaMess #ChennaiEats #SouthIndianFood #FoodieFinds #PongalLove #BudgetEats #SambarGoals #MustTryMeals

  • Best famous vegetarian hotel in Tripiclane area with vintage style ambience. Cleanliness is good in both dining and kitchen. Limited meals costs ₹110 Paruppu (Dal) + Ghee costs ₹10. They gave me a token. The mentioned number in the ticket is the allocated bench. They started serve meals items. They gave me a rice with a cake like a piece. Dal and Podi was awesome with ghee. Then had Sambar and Rasam. Entirely good. Fully satisfied.
